Brief Description of Instrument – Documents CNS time spent in 6 role components: patient care activities, consultation, education, administration, professional development, research.

Administration time – Requires time each day to record time spent in various role components.

Scale Format – Flowchart, fill in hours spent in various role components.

Administration Technique – Self-administered questionnaire.

Scoring and Interpretation – Calculate percentage of time spent in each role component, compare to ideal/predicted values determined in consultation with care providers and administrators.

Factors and Norms – Mean and range reported for each role component in original citation.

Content & Face Validity – Role components identified through literature review. Developed and tested by NPs working in a large institution for a trial period of 3 months, feedback used to refine instrument.

Strengths – The instrument can strengthen administrative evaluation of the CNS role and establish a basis for developing process and outcome evaluation. Can be used to demonstrate changes in the focus of practice and provide justification for additional resources in an area a CNS spends a large period of time.

Limitations – Time documentation alone is insufficient for CNS evaluation.

Notes for Consideration – Time documentation can be useful first step to support evaluation of NP effectiveness, and when beginning new role, to support role development. Recommended to be filled over a few months in order to observe the variation from month-to-month.
