Brief Description of Instrument – Explore barriers and facilitators of role implementation of the NP in the Emergency Department (ED) from the prospective of an NP. Content areas include: practice descriptors, facilitators to integration, essential skills for the role, support for the role, strategies to facilitate integration, barriers to integration, types of NP services, benefits to having an NP.

Scale Format – Varies. 5-point Likert, checklist, ranking, open-ended, yes/no, multiple choice.

Administration Technique – Self-administered questionnaire.

Scoring and Interpretation – Examine frequencies and descriptives. Content/thematic analysis of open-ended responses.

Factors and Norms – 5 factors found through principal component analysis: role clarity, perceived ED needs, support for the NP role, recruitment and retention, openness to NP role.

Test-retest Reliability – Alpha for each of the 5 factors range from 0.69-0.88.

Content & Face Validity – Items generated using data from semi-structured interview with ED NPs, MDs, RNs and administrators as well as literature review.
